  • Cowper was plagued by depression and melancholy his whole life.
  • Newton, a former slave ship captain, became a pastor in the town of Olney. There he befriended Cowper and tried to remedy his melancholy by writing hymns.

  • Together they published the Olney Hymn book.

  • Today Newton is best known for writing "Amazing Grace," and Cowper for "There is a Fountain Filled with Blood."
