John Newton and William Cowper
- Cowper was plagued by depression and melancholy his whole life.
Newton, a former slave ship captain, became a pastor in the town of Olney. There he befriended Cowper and tried to remedy his melancholy by writing hymns.
Together they published the Olney Hymn book.
Today Newton is best known for writing "Amazing Grace," and Cowper for "There is a Fountain Filled with Blood."
