This mug commemorates Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley, burned at the stake in Oxford on October 16, 1555 for refusing to renounce their Protestant faith. As the flames rose, Latimer encouraged Ridley with the famous words: “Be of good cheer, Mr. Ridley, and play the man. We shall this day light such a candle by God’s grace in England, as I trust shall never be put out.”

The Reformation motto *Post Tenebras Lux* (“After Darkness, Light”) captures the hope that shone through their sacrifice.
